Perthshire Native Snowdrops

Here's a poem in celebration of our UK garden worthy native - Galanthus nivalis.  A little flower bulb that you can depend on year on year to let us know that it won't be long until Spring.

Lone Flower, hemmed in with snows and white as they
But hardier far, once more I see thee bend.
Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis macrophotography

Thy forehead, as if fearful to offend,
Like an unbidden guest. Though day by day,
Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis macrophotography

Storms, sallying from the mountain-tops, waylay
The rising sun, and on the plains descend;
Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis macrophotography
f2.8

Yet art thou welcome, welcome as a friend
Whose zeal outruns his promise! Blue-eyed May

Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis macrophotography
f2.8
Shall soon behold this border thickly set
With bright jonquils, their odours lavishing
Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis macrophotography
f13
On the soft west-wind and his frolic peers;
Nor will I then thy modest grace forget,
Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis macrophotography

Chaste Snowdrop, venturous harbinger of Spring,
And pensive monitor of fleeting years!
 The Poetical Works of Wordsworth

For my phenology records - The native snowdrops along the lade started to bloom on the13th January 2012.

Lovely. Wordsworth does do your art justice.

Stunning photographs of such a delicate beauty, Rosie. I keep forgetting that snowdrops are native in some parts of the world. If I could grow snowdrops, and bluebells here, I think my garden would be truly complete.

That is lovely, snowdrops are so pretty. I've noticed a few poking their wee heads out - hurry up Spring. :))

Wow, my favorite flower, which does not grow in my native land, and i might not be able to see again in this lifetime. I cannot say anything anymore for these photos but "ELEGANCE". Nothing goes perfectly for them but that beautiful poem!

Stunning images. You showed here that shooting from every angle gives such different shots. Beautiful!

Wow, beautiful! The images go so well with the poem as well. The essence of the snowdrop, portrayed.

It is interesting how the colors are both soothing and vibrant at the same time. Quite lovely.

Rosie how lucky you are to have flowers already! I love snowdrops but have never been able to grow them in huge numbers that I would like too. I suspect my garden is too dry.
