What's in bloom in April?
![]() |
| Shakespeare tulips didn't last for GBBD but just had to share! |
If you're looking for some inspiration as to what to grow in your garden this April I've picked out a few of my favourites that are blooming this weekend for Carol's and Gesine's Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. April is a month that can have its surprises and our record breaking temperatures in March didn't last. There was a dramatic turnaround just like my wardrobe and out came the hat, scarf and gloves.
We woke up to snow and minus figures on the thermometer that would make any gardener cringe at this time of year. Vengeance took its toil on many of the flowers as they battled with the snow, heavy frosts and then those April showers............of hail!

Despite the chilly temperatures we gardeners are a very resilient lot and armed with horticultural fleece we don't let the weather deter us.........though we may have ended up with a few blemished blooms.
Here's my selection of Spring blues, mauve and purple and if you click on any of the blue url links within the post you'll be taken to a more detailed post on that subject.
The winning plants for encouraging the wildlife these past few weeks have been:
- The old cottage garden Pulmonaria officinalis and the amazing aerodynamic bee-flies.
- The nectar rich Lathyrus vernus which the bees have been drooling over as you'll see in the middle collage picture below (middle collage photo taken last week but flowers still in bloom today).

Top row left to right: Primula 'Greensleeves' mix, Muscari, Aubretia
Middle row left to right: Brunnera 'Jack Frost', Lathyrus vernus and
Omphalodes cappadocica 'Starry Eyes' - Navelwort
Bottom row left to right: Pulmonaria officinalis, Primula denticulata, Fritillaria meleagris - Snakes Head Fritillary.
Pulsatilla vulgaris looking as fuzzy wuzzy as ever is in full bloom today.

Forsythia, Silver Pear tree blossom and some of the Cherry blossom are almost hidden now by the lush new spring leaves while many of the tulips still have weeks of blooming ahead.

These photographs were taken between 7am - 8am Saturday 14th April...............just as well as by lunch time we had hail again!
Top left: lily flowering scented Ballerina tulips
Bottom left: Narcissus 'Pipit' - species, fragrant and multi headed
Tulip: unknown variety
Top right: Euphorbia myrsinites – myrtle spurge, Pulsatilla vulgaris alba - Pasque Flower
Middle: Spirea ajuta
Bottom right - Erysimum cheiri - Wallflowers
But wait there's also Foliage Followup and we can't forget about all the wonderful foliage that's starting to emerge. You don't have to wait until autumn to see the gold, russet, orange and pink colours when these are grown in the garden .........
with the most impressive just now being the Sobaria with its fresh pink feathery leaves.

Hello Rosie, Happy Sunday from the very hot (35C) tropics. I can see that you are very successfully incorporating all the knowledge you get from your photo workshops. They are all so beautiful and inspiring. The dreamy looks truly had me dreaming!
You have some beautiful blooms in your gardens. Happy GBBD and happy spring to you!
Beautiful blooms once again, and fantastic photos. Those 'Shakespeare' Tulips were spectacular. I love that Primula and the gorgeous 'Starry Eyes' Navelwort. Great shot of the Spirea and the Pulsatilla. Lovely foliage colours as well. Another great GBBD share.
So beautiful what a wonderful ethereal effect on your shots. Happy GBBD
Fantastic flowers and fantastic photos. Thank you so much for sharing.
It may have turned cold Rosie but you have many exquisite blooms to show us. I love your Pulsatilla, I am sure my lack of success with this one is due to bad placement in the garden, I must try it again. Thank you so very much for the visit and kind comments on my latest post. alistair

What a garden! I still have to wait for most of my blooms. RAin would help move things along.
Your garden looks beautiful, Rosie, in spite of all the troubles from Mother Nature it has had to endure. We had a hard freeze this past week, too, but thankfully no snow or hail. I'm not familiar with Sorbaria, but those pink leaves are gorgeous.
Very soft and pretty, Rosie. Very beautiful work.
Such beautiful blooms! But I'm so impressed with your photography! The photo of the Pulsatilla vulgaris could be a painting. Just lovely.
aloha dear friend,
yeah spring is beautiful with your mauves and blues....i also love the acer photos, your work is really shining..have a great month!
I love those blues, mauves and purples. Wish I had more in my garden, which seems to naturally lean to the hot colors orange, yellow, red. Your photos are lovely. Happy GBBD.
You have a lot of color. We are still in the greening up phase with the bulbs winding down. Lilacs and other flowering bushes are beginning their show. More to come each day. Been chilly and windy, keeping us inside all day, despite the amount of work we have to do outside. I love the softness and warmth of you photos.
Rosie your garden is certainly resilient with all the extremes in weather and your beautiful pictures make me want all those blooms in my garden.
Rosie, thanks for visiting my blog. I just started it on the first day of spring. Love your shots, and the presentation. The Sorbaria is so nice, and one of my favourite shrubs simply because of having some of the earliest buds bursting forth in spring. Yours is far ahead of mine. We're just at the big bud stage here in "New Scotland."
Lovely spring flowers and beautiful photos! I especially like your photo of Pulsatilla vulgaris. I used to grow them, in red blue and white, but they all died eventually. Don't think they liked my acid soil...We had hail here down in London today too, only for a few minutes, but I could do with some nice warm weather now!
Wonderful spring showing Rosie! The last shot of the Sorbaria is ethereal.
Hi Rosie. Your garden is looking so beautiful this spring. I love the Alba Pasque Flower.
Rosie,
So many pretty things this spring! Your photos do them such justice.
I have my first Ballerinas this spring and they are wonderful, even in their boldness. I have S. 'Goldflame' just feet away from them also... great combination. Happy April!... and hope the hail is over for you now.

Beautiful pictures of lovely flowers you have here Rosie. I love how soft and delicate you got them to look.
We have been having hail, rain and it's bloomin' cold as well.

Hi again Rosie, just came back to say thanks - once again - for the name of the plant :)) I've now labelled it on my blog with a mention of your blog - hope that's ok!!!
I don't think our weather has been quite as bad as your - we didn't lose any power but it's April this shouldn't be happening!!!
